We rated 10 of our favorite Lisbon viewpoints, Miradouros Lisboa in Portuguese, starting with the best viewpoint in our opinion. 1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

We will begin our top 10 Lisbon Viewpoints (Miradouros Lisboa) with our favorite viewpoint. We rated Miradouro da Senhora do Monte number 1 because of the high location on one of Lisbon’s highest hills in Lisbon, providing panoramic views over the entire city of Lisbon. From here, you can see iconic landmarks such as the Sao Jorge Castle, the Tagus River, and the sprawling cityscape. It is a very popular viewpoint in Lisbon, but it is quite spacious, so you may find a nice spot to enjoy its vistas.

2. Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Miradouro das Portas do Sol is our second favorite viewpoint in Lisbon. The name translates to “Gates of the Sun,” and it’s particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset. It offers breathtaking views over Eastern Lisbon with the terracotta rooftops, winding alleys, and the Tagus River, along with views of the National Pantheon and Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora in the distance. We loved the area surrounding this viewpoint in the Alfama neighborhood, it is a lively, busy area with many cafes and restaurants.

3. View from Santa Justa Lift

The Santa Justa Lift is an architectural marvel designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, operating since 1902. The lift connects the lower streets of the Baixa neighborhood with the higher Largo do Carmo in the Chiado neighborhood. It offers impressive views over the historic center of Lisbon from its observation deck. The ticket to ride up and down the elevator is €5.30, but it is free with one of the transportation cards we suggest purchasing in our Lisbon Transportation Guide. 4. Miradouro da Graca

We rated Miradouro da Graca #4 of the top 10 Miradouros Lisboa. It is a small viewpoint located right behind the Church, Igreja da Graca, which offers more Lisbon views from its terrace. The viewpoint provides a captivating view of central Lisbon, with Sao Jorge Castle prominently in the foreground and the 25 de Abril Bridge in the distance. It’s a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to relax and enjoy the scenery.

5. View from Castelo de Sao Jorge

Sao Jorge Castle, a historic castle dating back to the 8th century BC and offers unparalleled views from its walls. Overlooking the historic center of Lisbon and the Tagus River, this viewpoint provides a glimpse into Lisbon’s rich history and its strategic importance. The castle itself is a major attraction and a must-visit in Lisbon, with its well-preserved walls which you can stroll along, and the museum with tiles and pottery that were found within the castle over the many ages.

The entrance costs €15 and we recommend buying a ticket online. If you have a Lisboa Card (read all the information about it in our Lisbon Transportation Guide) it was recently included for free, so just show the card at the ticket office.

6. View from Belem Tower

The Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands on the banks of the Tagus River and offers a unique vantage point. This unique Manueline Gothic style fort was built by the architect Francisco de Arruda according to the plans of King D. Joao II to defend Lisbon from enemy ships. Climbing to the top of this 16th century fortress reveals a stunning panorama of the Tagus River, Padrao dos Descobrimentos Monument, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and Christo Rei on the other side of the river. We rated this view #6 of our top 10 best views in Lisbon.

7. Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara

We rated Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara #7 of our top 10 Lisbon viewpoints. It is a two-level terrace with beautifully landscaped gardens, a fountain, and a few restaurants, along with a spectacular viewpoint overlooking central Lisbon, including the Sao Jorge Castle and the downtown area. It is located in the Bairro Alto neighborhood near the upper station of Gloria Funicular which connects Restauradores Square on Avenida da Liberdade. The viewpoint is especially popular in the evening, with street musicians and a lively atmosphere. Nearby, you will find the best clubs and bars in Lisbon.

8. View from Arco da Rua Augusta

The grand triumphal arch, Arco da Rua Augusta, marks the dramatic entrance to the beautiful Praca do Comercio Square. It was built to commemorate the city’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. After climbing up to the top of the Arch, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the square with its stunning yellow-colored architecture, the scenic Tagus River, and the surrounding streets of downtown Lisbon. Entrance to the top costs 3.5€ but it is free with a Lisboa Card. Read more about it and see if the Lisboa Card is worth it.

9. Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located in the Alfama neighborhood, on Sao Vicente Hill, close to our #2 Miradouro das Portas do Sol. It is famous for its beautiful azulejo tiles depicting Lisbon’s history and the charming garden with bougainvillea-covered pergolas that add to the romantic ambiance. The viewpoint overlooks the Alfama’s winding streets, the domes of the churches, and the Tagus River.

10. Miradouro de Santa Catarina

Miradouro de Santa Catarina is also known as Miradouro do Adamastor, named after the sculpture of the mythical giant created by the Portuguese poet Luis de Camoes in his epic poem Os Lusiadas. This viewpoint is located in the Santa Catarina neighborhood and it offers a relaxed atmosphere with a great view of the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, especially in the evening, to watch the sunset and enjoy the vibrant nightlife in the surrounding area.
